Mallorcan Hideaways
This small Spanish island, part of the Balerics, is a real gem and quite a ‘find’ for us. For some reason, mainly because we had never been there, we had rather a snooty attitude to Mallorca. It had always conjured up images of package tours, English fish and chip shops and bad hotels. But we couldn’t have been more wrong and it is now our favourite Mediterranean hotspot. For starters it is incredibly easy to get to and very well serviced with flights. And when you are there it is stunning, particularly the mountainous west coast around Sollers which has spectacular scenery, beautiful traditional Spanish villages such as Deia and some incredible boutique hotels. Yes, it does have its share of tourists but so long as you avoid those areas this island is a joy. The beaches are beautiful and sandy, the sea clear and gentle. The countryside is olive groves and in the summer shimmering wheat fields stretching over unspoilt rolling farmland. And the best bit is their passion for turning the beautiful older country ‘fincas’ into gorgeous contemporary boutique hotels. On top of that they also know a thing or two about delicious Spanish cuisine.
